The Age of Asparagus

Nothing says springtime to me like asparagus.  When we lived in Switzerland we learned to eat food that was fresh and seasonal because, well, because we had no choice.  You couldn’t get things like blueberries from Chile in December.  You got what was seasonal and that was it.  Winter was a long procession of root vegetables – more parsnips, anyone?

So when the first tender asparagus arrived in March it was always a cause for celebration.  Every restaurant was full of special asparagus menus and everyone ate their fill.  It was glorious!

It is the same here in France, with asparagus marking the beginning of spring.  The markets are full of it, the restaurants feature it, everyone is eating it.  You even see people along the side of country roads hunting for wild asparagus, which is delicious in omelets.

So spring has definitely sprung here and it couldn’t be better.  Coming soon – strawberries!
