A Horse of a Different Color

Today was the big festival of St. Eloi, with a parade, benediction and luncheon.  Not knowing anything about St. Eloi, I did a little research and found that he is the patron saint of horses, of goldsmiths, of coin collectors and of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers corps of the British army. Seriously?  Do the Navy Seals get their own patron saint?

Because he is the patron saint of horses, there were a lot of them in the parade, mostly plow horses.  We rode into town on our bikes and passed all the horses, riders, musicians and wagons getting organized.  We also smelled them – boy do horses poop a lot.

The event started with a pipe and drum corps playing traditional music, followed by ladies wearing traditional outfits.  Then horses and wagons, young men cracking whips, and a long line of plow horses tied together in a long line.  Last was the big wagon covered with plants and flowers and a sign honoring the saint.

The whole cortège circled around town twice, then stopped in front of the church for the benediction.  After that a guy with a microphone made a whole bunch of boring announcements.  Or maybe he was the bingo caller.
